Shielded In The Community was a disabled-led project run in partnership with DaDa and funded by Liverpool City Council.

Mandy Redvers-Rowe is a disabled writer based in Liverpool. She worked with producer Harriet Warnock and Assistant Producer Robyn Bowyer. Together they delivered this project with a wonderful team of disabled and neurodiverse artists: Amina Atiq, Malik Lidgett and Elli Purse.

All of them had to shield in 2020 and 2021 but, although for many the restrictions have now been lifted, there are still a significant number of people who have to continue to shield.

This project gathered artistic responses to shielding from Disabled people in the North-West and its exhibition launches on 16 November to celebrate the start of Disability History Month.

Don't miss the accompanying discussion event on Friday 18 November at 2pm at the Museum of Liverpool where you'll have the opportunity to hear from some of the artists involved.

See below for Shielded's approach to creative access, specific to this event:

"We have a specific approach to Inclusive Arts and we aim to offer art that is accessible to all audiences without additional add on access. We acknowledge that each persons experience will not be the same, and by offering both an audio and film version. Each person will have equal access to material in a medium that allows an immersive arts experience and aims to explore Disabled people’s creative responses to Shielding using the full potential of that medium. The audio piece is rich in sound and includes music, spoken word and  poems. The film includes a visually evocative animation, art work and poems. Each medium works independently, they are not exact copies of each other and are designed to be complementary" - Mandy Redvers Rowe
