Steph Hughan biography

Steph smiling“It was suggested by my keyworker at a Day Centre, that I try some voluntary work. I tried various forms, such as being a Stable Hand and gardening, until he suggested I try DaDaFest.

I’ve been volunteering at DaDaFest since 2003, when it was known as North West Disability Arts Forum. I was learning BSL at the time, though I didn’t realise how useful this would be until I started. My role in the office is general administration duties such as answering the phone, taking messages, doing database entries and photocopying etc. I enjoy coming here because I am not judged for having a disability, and there is no problem in having my access needs met.

I particularly enjoy the festival time, as it pushes my limits and I have got to make friends with artists from all over the world.

In my spare time, I like to travel. I often support people who are nervous about travelling on public transport on their own. This has enabled people to start work in a different town, knowing that they are able to do it alone eventually.

I have 2 cats, called Tinker and Teefer. They have a huge double bed to themselves, which they occasionally let me into at night.

In the past, I have done bungee jumping, abseiling, rock climbing, hill walking and other “extreme sports”, now I have difficulty climbing the stairs! I love to go canal boating with friends, just watching the scenery float past.”
